Tones can be created in different ways, and one simple way is by layering. It’s a lot of work and Benjamin Shine used the transparant qualities of tulle, a fabric we all know from ballerina’s, to create wonderful and realistic portraits of famous people. Whereas painting often gives you flat line, working with fabrics gives a portrait more texture and depth. Using an iron Benjamin Shine sculpts, presses and pleats the huge single piece of tulle he needs for these portraits. And this is what enables Benjamin to make these three dimensional monochromatic portraits with tints and shadows. The tints and shadows are merely thin or think layers of the tulle all put there by hand, and they’re essential to create the realistic level of detail in portraits.
