Simon Shaw from Faversham, Kent in the UK is always on the look out for photogenic scenes and details, and found several in the local boatyard. Faversham has a strong heritage in boatbuilding and repair. Lack of protection from the natural elements have created interesting textures, shapes and colors for photographers. Even though it’s not so good for the boat owners.

Rust forms when metal and oxygen react with water, forming red oxides. There’s also green rust, generally forming under water where the supply of oxygen is less, on pillars of quays for example.

The corrosion is a slow yet dynamic process, eventually leading to the complete transformation of the metal to a useless ironoxide. Essentially bringing it back to original form before it was made into iron.
